Now this is what I mean by a more traditional comic book style - Don Edwards has updated and enhanced Kail's design and he looks the part of the cocky, ambitious soldier ready to plow through any obstacle in his way.
Kail thinks he can game the system he's been raised in and battle his way to a higher station in life, but what he doesn't realize is that the only way of life he's ever known is entirely corrupt. From the Emperor down, every person in authority knows to watch out for signs of ambition and initiative – and stamp it out. It isn't about the good of the people. It's about ultimate power for the Emperor.
Drawing attention in this kind of society is never a good thing.
And in the other corner...
From a planet not far distant - "distance" referring to how much energy it requires to get there - a giant of a young man, raised from birth to die for the Empire, but with a secret past that may push him beyond the destiny chosen for him - or completely destroy him.
Kail ip ibak*
(*of the untouchable ibak caste, which supplies the Emperor with plenty of warm bodies to use as cannon fodder in his endless interplanetary wars.)
Kail stands out in a crowd - not a good thing on his planet. Above average in intelligence, size, and strength, he has ambition and initiative that, sooner or later, is going to cause the wrong person to look bad in comparison.

Penance Copper - crappy home life with a history of exploitation and abuse. She'd like to be normal, with a happy normal life, but it just isn't going to happen. So instead, she watches carefully, sleeps lightly, smiles sweetly - and punches really, really hard.
She has the ability to generate a plasma field around her body through psychic direction and the chemistry of her skin usually keeps her insulated so she doesn't burn herself. She is much stronger than she looks, and is a capable - and unethical - fighter.
None of this helps her against her father, Acid, who is - or was - just as powerful. He's been training her to take over his work as an assassin specializing in killing other super-powered individuals, and her first assignment is soon.
She can hardly comprehend a life where she isn't his pawn. Her vague memories of her loving mother lead her spirit to rebel, but her heart is full of fear.
Will she find the strength to leave and strike out on her own for a better life? And will she ever truly belong anywhere?
